Hi Ladies today I want to talk to you about how to conquer cravings, stop binge eating and lose weight in 3 simple steps.

I know it feels like food has a strong hold over you at times but I am going to break this down for you and show you how to overcome it. I want you to know that I have been there, I know exactly how it feels, my weakness used to be chocolate or cake….anything sweet really. But I found some simple steps that helped me to overcome those urges for sugary food so I could take back control and lose the weight.

So with Easter having just been I am sure you were surrounded by chocolate, it was everywhere and it’s very easy to give into the temptation of buying and eating extra chocolate. But the simple equation is the more you eat, the more you need to move to stop your body storing fat. But I can guarantee that the increase in chocolate didn’t lead to an increase in physical activity?!

Now I am not here to tell you to never eat chocolate or sugar again, because I really am all about balance. I am also about natural good food, so a tip would be to make your own chocolate and sweet treats so you can monitor exactly what’s in them and look after your body!

Ok…so let’s talk about the physical urges you have for food, the ones that seem to have control over your mind, your thoughts, your body! The one’s that are strong enough to drag you up off the sofa, away from the tv, over to the kitchen cupboard, to the chocolate box and make you eat before you’ve even really realised what’s going on.

Take a delicious creamy, melt in your mouth, Lindt ball. I’m sure we all know the ones. If there was a box of these at home how hard would it be to say no? Would you think about them sitting in the cupboard all day? Would you be fighting the urge to eat it and not give in? Would you be convincing yourself that it’s ok to have another one because you’ll do some extra walking tomorrow? If you answered yes to any of these questions then this food has control over you!

I want to let you in on a secret; whatever you think you are getting from that food, whatever you think it is making you feel you are wrong. You see most people will think it gives them happiness, or a time out, or enjoyment or a distraction or maybe it just goes well with a cup of tea and a sit on the sofa with your favourite show, but it is not the food that is giving you those feelings, you are creating them yourself.

There is no food in the world that can give you happiness, love, comfort, a distraction or any feeling at all (other than having eaten way too much and feeling physically stuffed or sick!) That food item doesn’t have anything to give, it has no hands to pass you a bundle of happiness or love, it’s just food. (I know that sounds ridiculous but you get what I am saying) It’s not the food that creates the feeling in you that you are wanting, you create it.

Now maybe you are thinking well I don’t eat for happiness or love or comfort and I hear you, I used to think the same. But I can tell you this, if you are eating for any other reason than physical hunger, you know when you ‘just fancy something sweet’ then this is driven by emotion, it is you wanting something from the food.

I used to use food as a comfort and a distraction from the real problems going on in my life, the real things that I didn’t want to have to deal with so I would chase the positive feelings that had become linked to food. The problem with this is you continue to chase this feeling and you over eat and you sabotage your health, your weight, your happiness, your life. So it has to stop! You need to cut out the middle man, instead of eating to obtain a certain feeling, how about you skip straight to the feeling so you can skip out the crappy food and have a healthier body?

How I hear you ask?….well I will show you.

When you have an urge or craving for a certain food;

Step #1: STOP and stay where you are before you move and act on the urge.Take a deep breath. Breath in for 6 seconds. Hold the breath for 6 seconds. And release for 6 seconds. As you release the air imagine letting the urge or craving go, let it out of your body. Repeat this 3 times.

Step #2: FIND THE PURPOSE: Tell yourself, in your head or out loud “I have everything in me that I need” And ask yourself what is it you want from the food? What feeling is it you are chasing? What void do you need filling? Notice what comes to mind.

Step #3 :ALTERNATIVE: How can I get this in another more positive way? E.g take a walk, go outside, read, listen to music, go for a run, call a friend, cuddle your partner, play with your children, colour, draw, do a crossword, do anything else but eat the food.

By doing this you will begin to break down the neurological connection that your mind has constructed around food and form a new one that achieves the same results but without sabotaging your health, your figure and your happiness!

When you do this guys you will have an overwhelming sense of pride and achievement, so put it straight in to practice and be sure to let me know how you get on!

Excited to hear how it goes!
